About Dr. Catherine Papagiorgio Psy.D, LCPC

Bringing over 30 years of experience providing counseling and therapy services, Dr. Papagiorgio holds a doctorate degree in psychology and is licensed as a Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). She studied under the late Dr. Jon Carlson (1945–2017), a nationally recognized psychologist and Distinguished Professor at Governors State University. An icon in Adlerian therapy, his work helped shape contemporary counseling and family therapy. He was named one of five “Living Legends in Counseling” in 2004 by the American Counseling Association. Dr. Papagiorgio had the privilege of being taught by him directly during her graduate training, an experience that deeply influenced her clinical development. As part of her clinical education under him, she completed advanced training in couples and family therapy and sexual physiology, deepening her understanding of relational dynamics, attachment, communication patterns, and the biological and psychological factors that influence intimacy and sexual functioning.

She further completed extensive training in domestic violence, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), psychodynamic approaches, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Her professional development also includes specialized work in compassion fatigue, polyvagal‑informed and trauma‑informed therapy, attachment‑based approaches, and certification in alcohol and drug counseling and neuropsychotherapy. She has been university‑trained and certified in stress management since 1999.

Dr. Papagiorgio’s philosophy is rooted in the understanding that human beings are shaped by experiences that begin long before they have language, choice, or control. She believes that the nervous system learns to adapt to the world from the very beginning of life, and that early environments, whether nurturing or overwhelming  leave lasting impressions on how a person relates to themselves, others, and the world. These early adaptations are not signs of weakness or personal failure; they are expressions of the human condition, formed in response to circumstances that were often far beyond one’s control.

She views trauma not as an event alone, but as the impact that overwhelming experiences have on the developing nervous system. Trauma, loss, instability, and adverse experiences can take hold in childhood in ways that shape beliefs, emotional patterns, and survival strategies long before a child has the capacity to understand what is happening. These responses—hypervigilance, emotional numbing, self‑blame, people‑pleasing, withdrawal, or intense emotional reactions—are not character flaws. They are the body’s best attempts to stay safe in environments that felt unpredictable or unsafe. In her work, she emphasizes that these patterns are never a child’s fault, and that they often persist into adulthood because the nervous system continues to rely on what once ensured survival.

At the heart of her philosophy is the belief that healing begins with understanding. When clients can see their patterns through a lens of compassion rather than judgment, they gain the freedom to choose new ways of relating, responding, and living. She believes that insight, when paired with safety and connection, creates the conditions for meaningful change.

Therapeutic Approach

Her therapeutic approach integrates neuroscience, trauma‑informed care, and meaning‑making models to help clients understand not only what they feel, but why they feel it. She supports clients in exploring how their histories have shaped their internal world, while also helping them build the capacity to regulate emotions, strengthen resilience, and create new patterns that align with their values and hopes.

Dr. Papagiorgio sees therapy as a collaborative, relational process. She believes that healing does not occur through techniques alone, but through the experience of being understood, respected, and met with genuine presence. She works from the perspective that every person carries inherent strengths, even when those strengths have been overshadowed by pain, stress, or survival‑based adaptations. Her role is to help clients reconnect with those strengths, reclaim their sense of agency, and move toward a life that feels grounded, intentional, and whole.

Ultimately, her philosophy reflects a deep respect for the complexity of human experience. She believes that people are not defined by what has happened to them, and that with support, insight, and compassion, individuals can create new pathways toward healing, connection, and meaning.
